The classical whale band

This page counts addresses holding 1,000-10,000 BTC — hundred-million to billion-dollar territory at current prices. The 1,000 BTC line is on-chain analysis's long-standing whale threshold, and this band is where most whales live: exchange cold wallets, large ETF/institutional custody shards, and the earliest individual and miner whales. The population is tiny — consistently around 1,900-2,100 addresses within this site's window — so every single address's action leaves a visible notch on the curve. That fundamentally changes how the chart is read: the smaller bands are crowd statistics; this one is closer to a roll call.

A small sample demands a different grammar

With ~2,000 addresses, daily net changes usually run in single digits — day-to-day wiggles carry almost no statistical meaning. Only two things are readable: multi-month trend direction, and abrupt step changes. Steps almost always have a concrete mechanical cause: an exchange splitting one 10K-coin cold wallet into ten 1K-coin wallets (+10 to this band), or a custodian consolidating ten 1K addresses into one 10K address (−10) — wallet-management policy changed, not market positioning. Establishing genuine accumulation or distribution requires off-chain corroboration: exchange flows, ETF creations and redemptions.

The window's shape and its candidate explanations

Within this site's window the count slid gently from its July 2022 high, based in early 2024, and has ranged since — a stark contrast with the simultaneous boom in the 100-1,000 band below. Plausible drivers: custodians favoring finer shard sizes (mega-wallets split downward out of this band), sustained exchange-reserve outflows (cold-wallet fleets shrinking), and some ancient whales trimming into strength. All three forces are real, and pure on-chain data cannot apportion credit among them — the classic large-band dilemma: change is visible, causes are not.

Usage advice

Three rules. Read this band merged with the >10,000 BTC page (also on this site): mega-wallet migrations between the two cancel out, making the combined trend far more reliable. Treat any viral 'whale addresses exploding/collapsing' take as wallet housekeeping until proven otherwise. And this band is nearly useless for short-term signals — its value is answering, on an annual timescale, one question: are the chain's largest entities consolidating or expanding overall?
1,000-10,000 BTC is the standard whale band (tens to hundreds of millions of dollars). Trend shifts in this cohort are among the most-cited on-chain evidence of institutional accumulation or distribution.
Alongside on-chain distribution, track derivatives positioning via open interest and long/short ratios.
