The exchange rate, inverted

1 BTC = 100 million satoshis — the smallest unit, named for Bitcoin's creator. Instead of asking "how many dollars per coin," this chart asks "how many sats per dollar": 1e8 ÷ price. When price rises, this line falls. No new data is involved — it is purely a flip of perspective, treating bitcoin as the measuring stick and charting the dollar's purchasing power against it.

Why some prefer this lens

Three reasons. Psychology: "$70,000 per coin" makes newcomers feel priced out, while "a thousand-odd sats per dollar" is a reminder that bitcoin is divisible to any amount — there is no need to afford a whole coin. Narrative: the community uses it to visualize the claim that fiat persistently depreciates against bitcoin; the line's decade-long decline is that argument in graphical form. Milestones: sats-per-dollar breaking below round numbers (10,000, 1,000) gets discussed as cycle markers.

Reading notes

It carries exactly the same information as the price chart with the axis flipped — it provides no independent signal, and "fewer sats per dollar" should trigger no conclusion you wouldn't draw from price itself. On a log axis, its long decline is simply the mirror of long-run price appreciation; citing it as independent evidence that "the dollar is going to zero" is circular reasoning.
