The block interval is an engineering trade-off Satoshi baked into the consensus rules. Shorter intervals leave too little time for new blocks to propagate worldwide, breeding forks and weakening security; longer intervals make confirmation waits impractical. Ten minutes buys global propagation headroom while keeping settlement latency tolerable, and the parameter has never changed.

Every 2,016 blocks the network measures how long the epoch actually took against the theoretical two weeks and rescales difficulty proportionally, capped at 4× per adjustment. A quirk worth knowing: an off-by-one bug in the original code means only 2,015 intervals are actually sampled — a harmless bias preserved forever because fixing it would break consensus.

With stable hashrate, averages hug 10 minutes (running slightly under during steady hashrate growth). The most dramatic dislocation came in mid-2021: China's mining ban wiped out nearly half the network's hashpower while difficulty stayed calibrated to pre-ban levels, stretching block times badly until the ~28% difficulty cut of early July 2021 — the largest downward adjustment ever — restored equilibrium. In the network's earliest era, difficulty sat at its floor and block pace simply tracked whatever hashpower existed.

This series is a daily average (1,440 minutes ÷ blocks that day), which smooths away single-block noise. Individual block intervals follow an exponential distribution with huge variance — even at a 10-minute average, waits above 20 minutes are entirely normal and occasional gaps exceed an hour. Use the daily average to spot hashrate shocks, not to predict when the next block lands.
