The total transaction fees Bitcoin users pay miners each day, in USD. Block space is scarce — roughly 4M weight units per block, one block every ~10 minutes — so faster confirmation means bidding a higher fee rate. It is a continuous auction for block space, and total daily fees are the most direct price signal of how urgent on-chain demand is.

Every major fee spike maps to a rush for block space. December 2017: at the bull-market peak, individual transactions briefly cost over $50 with hundreds of thousands stuck unconfirmed. May 2023: the Ordinals inscription and BRC-20 token frenzy pushed per-block fees above the 6.25 BTC subsidy for the first time since 2017. April 2024: the Runes protocol launch turned the halving block (840,000) into some of the most expensive block space ever sold. Congestion can come from bull-market FOMO — or from protocol events with no price connection at all.

Fees are a pressure gauge, not a counter: transaction counts measure how many people use the chain, fees measure how much they'll pay to jump the queue. Persistently low fees mean block space supply exceeds demand; sustained high fees mean demand is real and urgent. Fees have historically surged near cycle tops — but the 2023 inscription boom proved high fees don't require new price highs.

USD denomination mixes in the BTC price: if price doubles with unchanged on-chain demand, this line doubles too — check the BTC-denominated version to isolate the fee market itself. Also note that SegWit (2017) and Taproot (2021) changed how data is priced, while exchange batching and Lightning divert demand off-chain; comparing fee levels across eras without accounting for these structural shifts is misleading.
