How to read a cumulative curve
This chart sums Bitcoin's daily on-chain fees (in USD) from genesis onward. The total can only rise — the information is in the slope. Steep segments mark fee-intensive eras; flat segments mark quiet ones. It reads like a geological record of the fee market: the ramps of late 2017, 2021, and the 2023–2024 inscription-and-halving period stand out clearly.
What question it answers
Cumulative fees are the total price users have ever paid for Bitcoin block space — and the entirety of miner compensation beyond the block subsidy. Set against the cumulative subsidy, it shows how far the network has progressed on its most important long-term transition: the security budget handing over from subsidy to fees. The honest answer: still very early — the overwhelming majority of all miner revenue to date has come from the subsidy.
Limitations
USD denomination flattens history: early-era fees, meaningful in BTC terms at the time, are nearly invisible in dollars, so the curve structurally overweights recent years — see the BTC-denominated version for the price-neutral view. And a cumulative series says nothing about short-term conditions; this is a background indicator, not a trading signal.
