Statistiques UTXO

Bitcoin has no account balances — only UTXOs (unspent transaction outputs). Every spendable sum is a discrete "coin chunk," and your balance is simply the sum of your UTXOs. This chart counts the total entries in the global UTXO set — at once a trace of economic activity and the size of the validation database every full node must keep.

The set's long-run growth records structural change in usage. It grew steadily with adoption in the early years; approached its then-high (~84.6 million, per BitMEX Research) during the on-chain exodus after FTX collapsed in November 2022; then came the step-change of the inscription era — BitMEX Research documents the set ballooning from ~84 million to ~169 million entries between December 2022 and September 2025, driven overwhelmingly by tiny outputs from BRC-20 and inscription protocols. A mempool.space research report found nearly half of all UTXOs hold under 1,000 sats, much of it non-monetary data outputs.

The UTXO set is the database every full node must query at speed to validate transactions: more entries mean more disk and RAM, and slower initial sync for new nodes. In the inscription era the chainstate swelled from roughly 4–5 GB to over 11 GB, fueling ongoing protocol-level debates about slimming solutions such as Utreexo. UTXO count is thus not just an activity metric — it directly measures the cost of running a full node, a core decentralization parameter.

UTXO count has no stable mapping to users or holders: one person can hold a single large UTXO or ten thousand fragments, while an exchange packs millions of customers into a handful of outputs. During low-fee periods, wallets batch-consolidate fragments and the count dips — maintenance, not user exodus.
