Bitcoin Block Height

Block height counts blocks from the genesis block (height 0, Jan 3 2009). It is Bitcoin's native clock: halvings and difficulty retargets trigger at specific heights, not calendar dates.

The protocol targets one block per 10 minutes on average, but real intervals drift with hashrate; every 2,016 blocks (~2 weeks) difficulty retargets to pull the pace back to target.
