What's on the chart

Bitcoin's price overlaid with the two most classic simple moving averages: the 50-day and the 200-day. Moving averages are among the oldest tools in technical analysis — an arithmetic mean of the last N daily closes that filters noise into a smooth trend line. The 50DMA tracks the intermediate trend, the 200DMA the long-term trend; the pairing is standard across equities, commodities and FX, not something Bitcoin-specific.

Golden cross, death cross

The 50DMA crossing above the 200DMA is the "golden cross," traditionally read as confirmation the long-term trend has turned up; crossing below is the "death cross." Honesty requires saying: these signals lag. Averages are built from past prices, so by the time a cross prints, the move is often well underway — and Bitcoin's history has plenty of whipsaws where price reversed right after a cross, especially in ranging markets. Their value is defining trend state, not precision timing.

The 200DMA's special status in Bitcoin

The 200-day line is the foundation of several well-known Bitcoin indicators: the Mayer Multiple (introduced by Trace Mayer) is literally price ÷ 200DMA, and "price above/below the 200-day" is the most common bull/bear filter in quantitative strategies. Because Bitcoin's volatility dwarfs traditional assets, price can stretch from its 200DMA to degrees rarely seen elsewhere — precisely why deviation metrics like the Mayer Multiple work unusually well here.

Limitations

Moving averages are pure price derivatives with no on-chain or fundamental content. The 50/200 parameters are convention, not optimization — small parameter changes can flip signals. And in violent V-shaped reversals they lag badly. Use them as trend context, paired with on-chain valuation metrics such as MVRV or Realized Price.
