How many coins sit underwater
Supply in Loss = the total bitcoins whose cost basis exceeds the current price — the complement of Supply in Profit, using the same per-UTXO cost convention (Binance 1-minute close at creation). Where UTXOs in Loss counts how many receipts are losing, this page counts how many coins are pinned underwater. The coin-volume lens maps directly onto the physical scale of latent sell pressure: every underwater coin is a chip that might get dumped in panic — or become overhead resistance the moment it breaks even.
A terrain map of trapped supply
The absolute water level sizes the trapped cohort, but the more informative feature is how the paper loss gets digested. Underwater supply can only shrink two ways: price climbs back above cost (positions surface), or holders capitulate and the coins change hands at a lower basis (new buyers inherit cheaper cost). The first shows up as loss supply sliding quickly on rallies — light overhead, weak resistance. The second shows up as loss supply grinding down without a price rise while realized losses run heavy — the market rebuilding its cost structure through a transfusion. That is the on-chain essence of bear-market bottoming.
Reference points
Within this site's window, supply in loss bottomed in mid-December 2024 (the all-time-high, near-universal-profit moment — only thousands of coins remained underwater) and peaked in late June 2026 (the window's furthest stretch below the highs, with over ten million coins in the red). The cross-cycle pattern: loss supply approaching half of circulating supply has historically coincided with deep-bear capitulation zones. In healthy bull corrections, by contrast, the rise in loss supply is composed mostly of freshly-bought top-of-range coins — verifiable against the STH supply page.
Data notes
Symmetric to the profit page. Coins in exchange and ETF custody wallets are booked at the wallet's on-chain cost, unrelated to beneficial owners' actual cost — large custodial reshuffles fabricate profit/loss migrations. Extreme-day readings can lag (cost is frozen at UTXO creation but market price is daily). The feed is bitcoin-data.com's rolling ~4-year window; ignore isolated collection glitches. The fixed pairing to remember: this page (coin stock) + UTXOs in Loss (receipt stock) + Realized Loss (dollar flow).
