The whole-coin threshold
The count of addresses holding at least 1 BTC. Nothing about 1 BTC is technically special, but psychologically it is a landmark: a 21-million cap means fewer than 0.3% of people on Earth can ever hold a full coin, making wholecoiner a status line in community parlance. At current prices the threshold also represents a five-figure-dollar allocation — so this curve can be loosely read as the number of on-chain units both able and willing to make a serious Bitcoin allocation.
This site's summation methodology
A methodological disclosure: this page is computed in-house by summing the data source's balance-cohort counts (1-10, 10-100, 100-1K, 1K-10K, and >10K BTC), because the source's balance-addr-1-BTC endpoint actually counts addresses below 1 BTC and cannot be used directly. The summed series means all addresses holding 1 BTC or more, on the same rolling ~4-year window (from July 2022) as the tier pages. Each tier's individual trajectory has its own page here; this page is their total.
The window's plot: the million mark, gained and lost
The window's story revolves around the round number of one million: first crossed in May 2023, window high of 1,024,474 on 2024-01-01, then a slide back below a million during the sharp price advance of late 2024 (the last day above was 2024-11-21), currently near 980K. Two non-exclusive readings: rising prices raised the capital cost of topping up to a full coin, slowing marginal entries; and some holders trimmed below the threshold into strength, or moved coins to exchanges/custody where address consolidation deletes counts. The window began (July 2022) near 880K — a net gain of roughly 100K addresses over four years.
Reading it through the scarcity lens
The curve's long-run value is that it quantifies the scarcity narrative: wholecoiner growth faces monotonic pressure as price rises — the same fiat buys ever less bitcoin. Slowing growth is therefore not inherently bearish; read it jointly with price. Count growth during flat price regimes is genuine accumulation; count decline during vertical rallies is mostly the threshold effect. Standing caveats apply: addresses are not people, a single exchange consolidation can erase thousands of counts overnight, daily moves are unreadable — trust quarterly trends and longer.
Holding one whole bitcoin is a psychologically significant threshold; slowing growth in 'wholecoiner' addresses typically signals rising supply scarcity.
