The fee ledger, price removed

This chart accumulates daily on-chain fees denominated in BTC. Unlike the USD version it is immune to price swings — early and recent eras sit on the same ruler, making it the cleanest lens on the long-run evolution of Bitcoin's fee market.

History in the slope

Each steep segment tells a story: the first fee crunch of late 2017; the 2023 inscription boom, when annual fees hit roughly 23,445 BTC — over four times the prior year; the April 2024 halving and Runes land-grab. The flat stretches speak too: the 2018–2020 bear and the low-fee era since 2025 barely move the curve. Slope changes map directly onto the supply-demand cycle for block space.

Why this ledger matters

Bitcoin's endgame security question: when the block subsidy approaches zero, can fees alone pay for enough hashpower? The ratio of cumulative BTC fees to cumulative subsidy (which tops out just under the 21M issuance cap) is the progress bar for that century-scale transition. Today the ratio remains small — the fee handover is an open question that will resolve over decades, not cycles.
