Blockchain size is the cumulative bulk of all historical block data (this chart is in MB). Every full node must download and verify this complete ledger from genesis to independently validate the provenance of every coin. It only grows — each new block adds permanently to the total. Block size itself is consensus-constrained: originally a 1MB cap, changed by the 2017 SegWit upgrade to 4 million weight units — typical blocks run 1.5-2MB with a theoretical ceiling near 4MB.

Early blocks ran mostly empty and the chain grew slowly; through 2016-2017 blocks filled up and growth turned steadily linear; from 2023 the Ordinals inscription wave pushed average blocks fuller — at times near the ceiling — and steepened the pace. By mid-2026 the full chain stands at roughly 750GB. The log axis makes the early acceleration and the later steady slope both legible.

Chain size directly prices the cost of running a full node: storage, initial block download time, bandwidth. The higher that cost, the fewer people validate independently, and the more concentrated verification power becomes. This was the crux of the block-size wars (2015-2017): the small-block side deliberately sacrificed on-chain throughput to keep node operation within reach of consumer hardware. Bitcoin Core's pruned mode validates the full chain but retains only the most recent few GB, slashing storage needs — at the cost of not serving historical blocks to new peers.

This is a cumulative curve — always rising, carrying no bullish or bearish signal by itself. The information is in the growth rate: sudden steepening marks new forms of block-space demand (inscriptions being the prime example). For perspective, full archival data of chains like Ethereum long ago exceeded Bitcoin's by multiples — Bitcoin's restrained chain growth is a design choice, not a technical shortfall.
