What is the COT report?
The CFTC publishes the Commitments of Traders report every Friday (as-of Tuesday close), breaking down CME Bitcoin & Ether futures positioning by trader class: Dealers (market-making desks), Asset Managers (mutual/pension funds), Leveraged Funds (hedge funds/CTAs), Other Reportables and small Non-Reportable traders.
How to use it
Leveraged funds typically run net short as the futures leg of basis trades — a rapid unwind often accompanies basis compression. Asset manager net longs track directional allocation from traditional finance. Extremes and inflection points matter more than absolute levels.
