How do governments get Bitcoin?
Most government holdings come from law-enforcement seizures (US: Silk Road/Bitfinex cases; China: PlusToken; UK: money-laundering cases). A few acquire deliberately: El Salvador has been buying for its treasury since 2021, and Bhutan mines with state hydropower.
Why it matters
Government wallet moves hit the market directly — Germany's ~50K BTC liquidation over a few weeks in 2024 weighed on prices, while the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (2025) flipped seized coins from a sell-pressure source into long-term locked supply.
Methodology
Aggregated from public court filings and news disclosures (bitbo.io), daily snapshot. Actual disposal of seized coins often lags reports; some entries (e.g. China) are estimates with unconfirmed disposals, and Germany's balance is now zero.
