Market share, measured in turnover

The familiar BTC dominance uses market cap; this page swaps the ruler: what share of all spot turnover trades in BTC pairs? Cap dominance measures how stored wealth is distributed; volume dominance measures where attention and flow are right now — the two regularly diverge, and the divergence is itself a signal. This is an in-house metric: computed from this site's kline base covering 713 coins' daily turnover (Binance spot scope), with BTC share = BTC daily turnover ÷ all-coin total.

Three honest scope disclosures

First, single-venue scope: Binance spot only — the largest single spot venue globally, structurally representative, but numerically different from whole-market aggregations. Second, short history: the kline base began collection in June 2024; this page has nothing earlier and cannot support cross-cycle comparison. Third, the denominator is the sum of 713 collected coins, excluding the uncollected long tail. Against third-party aggregates, this scope's advantages are lower wash-volume contamination (within a single venue, internal comparability is strong) and a fully transparent calculation.

Violent swings within the window

Across the two-year window the share has swung between 8.85% (2025-09-21) and 48.41% (2024-07-27), currently near 31.6% — a five-fold range, far wilder than cap dominance ever moves. That is the nature of the turnover lens: when an altcoin frenzy ignites, hundreds of billions in speculative churn can halve BTC's share within weeks (the September 2025 trough was a textbook alt-overheat), and when risk-off returns, flow snaps back to the BTC majors. The low extremes have historically marked altcoin sentiment climaxes — cross-check against the altcoin season index (separate page on this site).

Usage advice

Three uses. As a risk-appetite thermometer: a fast-falling share means speculative heat spreading into higher-risk assets; a fast-recovering share means de-risking. As altseason confirmation: when the altcoin season index signals, verify here whether turnover genuinely migrated. As an extremes-reversal reference: approaches to either end of the window's range have tended to mark inflection points in alt/BTC relative strength. Note the most recent day or two of readings refresh with unfinished candles — trust post-close values for judgment.
