Whale Alert

Whale alerts monitor large on-chain transfers above a size threshold, labelling counterparties where possible: exchanges, mining pools, custodians or unknown wallets.

Large transfers are easy to misread because the overwhelming majority are internal housekeeping — exchanges shifting funds between hot and cold wallets, custodians consolidating UTXOs — none of which reflects intent to trade. Only two categories carry real information: large deposits from unknown wallets into exchanges (potential sell pressure) and large withdrawals from exchanges to unknown wallets (potential long-term holding). Even then a single transfer has weak predictive power; read the sustained trend in directional net flow instead. Address labelling itself is frequently incomplete or wrong.

Address metrics track how on-chain balances are distributed. Remember an address is not a person: exchange hot/cold wallets, custodians and change addresses all distort the count, so the direction of the trend matters far more than the absolute number.

Threshold design is per-chain by necessity: a transfer that ranks in the top percentile on one network is routine on another, so alerts key off notional bands calibrated to each chain's transfer distribution rather than one global dollar cutoff. Attribution combines curated public labels, exchange deposit-address patterns and clustering heuristics, with confidence varying by chain, since UTXO chains and account-based chains leak different information. Stablecoin events form their own category with distinct semantics: large mints and burns at the treasury level reflect issuance pipeline operations rather than trading, and reading them as market orders is a recurring retail mistake, because what matters is a sustained mint-then-distribute sequence flowing toward exchanges. The feed pairs naturally with the rich-list pages, which show the stock corresponding to these flows, and a large transfer means something different coming from a dormant five-year-old address than from a wallet that cycles weekly. Alert volume itself trends with volatility, so a quiet feed is also information.
