Inflow / Outflow

Inflow / Outflow là gì?

Exchange inflow and outflow tracks the net direction of Bitcoin moving between exchange-controlled addresses and external ones. Net inflows mean more coins are arriving on exchanges (potential sell pressure), while net outflows mean coins are being withdrawn to self-custody, usually read as intent to hold. A live chart built on Coin Metrics community data is already available on this site's exchange inflow/outflow page.

Cách đọc chỉ báo

The most common misuse is treating a single day's net flow as a directional signal. Exchange address labelling is never complete, internal hot/cold consolidation generates large movements unrelated to trading, and daily noise is severe. The reliable read is the cumulative trend over several weeks or more, with priority given to total exchange balance as a stock measure — a falling balance alongside rising price is the healthier structure, whereas a rising balance into a rally means coins are concentrating on exchanges and pullback risk is higher. The rise of custody and ETFs has also systematically shifted this metric's baseline.

Volume and market-structure metrics describe the size and distribution of trading activity. Methodologies differ sharply between venues (wash-trading filters, USD conversion), so confirm the accounting basis before comparing platforms side by side.

Phương pháp và lưu ý

The underlying series is built from labelled exchange address clusters: a transfer counts as an inflow when coins move from an external address into a cluster attributed to an exchange, and as an outflow in the reverse direction. Coverage is therefore only as good as the labelling. Newly created deposit addresses take time to be attributed, and internal transfers between two exchanges can appear as a simultaneous outflow and inflow. A practical reading framework: treat the seven-day and thirty-day cumulative net flow as the signal layer and single days as noise; always cross-check against the total exchange balance page, which measures the stock rather than the flow; and remember that one-off events, such as an exchange migrating cold wallets or a custodian onboarding a large client, can dominate a week of data without any change in market intent. Flow extremes around crisis events, from exchange insolvency rumours to stablecoin depeg scares, are the moments this dataset genuinely earns its keep.
