The classic technical rules apply: rallies on rising volume are more trustworthy than rallies on thin volume; heavy-volume declines mean real sell pressure; new price highs on shrinking volume are a divergence warning. Bitcoin's twist is 24/7 global trading with no circuit breakers — panic and euphoria print in volume instantly, and the extreme-volume days on record cluster around major events: crashes, short squeezes, regulatory shocks.

Know this before quoting the numbers: self-reported exchange volume has a long credibility problem. Bitwise's 2019 research submitted to the US SEC estimated that roughly 95% of aggregated BTC spot volume on popular tracking sites at the time was suspect wash trading, with only a handful of regulated venues reporting trustworthy data. Major data providers have since introduced "trusted volume" adjustments, but wash trading never fully disappeared. Treat this chart as a relative trend gauge; cite absolute levels with caution.

The relationship between exchange volume and on-chain movement is itself informative. Exchange volume exploding while the chain stays quiet usually means existing coins churning at high frequency — speculation-driven. On-chain transfers and exchange deposits/withdrawals expanding together typically mark real coins entering or leaving the market.
