What the two lines actually are

This page plots daily active receiving addresses and daily active sending addresses: per the provider bitcoin-data.com, the number of unique addresses appearing as receivers, and as senders, each day. A clarification up front: despite the page's legacy 'new addresses' naming, both lines count active-that-day, not first-ever-seen. The receiving side does include many first-use addresses — Bitcoin best practice is a fresh address per receipt — so the receiver curve is often used as a proxy for new-address activity, but the two are not strictly equal.

Division of labor with the Active Addresses page

This site has a separate Active Addresses page (blockchain.info's daily unique active total); the relation is roughly: active ≈ receivers ∪ senders (an address doing both counts once). The value of splitting into two lines is directionality: receiver activity reflects money-in / new-wallet events, sender activity reflects money-out / old-wallet mobilization. The lines usually move together; divergences are the interesting part — days when senders far exceed receivers tend to involve concentrated distribution or large wallet migrations, while receivers far exceeding senders typically marks airdrop- or inscription-minting-style mass receipt events.

Addresses are not people

The first commandment of address metrics: one person can control unlimited addresses, and one address can serve unlimited people (an exchange hot wallet fronts millions of users). Transaction batching lets exchanges fold hundreds of withdrawals into one on-chain transaction, deflating sender counts; change outputs make a single payment spawn multiple outputs. Address counts therefore suit trend-and-magnitude reading, never literal user counts. During the inscription/runes waves since 2023, activity spikes reflected minting bots more than genuine user growth — the essential noise filter for recent charts.

How to use it

Two practical lenses. As a network-health baseline: the long-run level of receiver/sender activity is a coarse proxy for on-chain adoption, correlating with price better over years than weeks. As a top-divergence signal: several past cycle highs printed with price at new highs while address activity failed to follow — a hint that the rally ran on existing money churning, not new entrants. Within this site's window, receiver activity peaked in November 2022 (the FTX-era self-custody exodus) and its baseline has drifted lower since — on-chain-native activity migrating into ETF and other off-chain channels is the structural backdrop to systematically softer address metrics after 2024.
