The most basic adoption gauge
The non-zero balance address count is the foundation of all address metrics: how many addresses on the chain hold any amount of bitcoin at all. No threshold, no tiers — it measures Bitcoin's account footprint as a network. Data comes from the Coin Metrics community dataset (AdrBalCnt), with full history from 2009-01-09: from 19 addresses on day one to over 57 million today. This is also the only page in this site's address series with complete history — the tiered pages (>1, >10, >100 BTC and so on) run on a rolling ~4-year window.
Milestones from 19 to 57 million
Crossings readable straight off the data: 1 million in November 2012 (nearly four years after genesis); 10 million in August 2016; 30 million in March 2020; 40 million in January 2022; 50 million in November 2023. Notice the spacing between ten-million steps stretches and then compresses — growth is anything but steady, alternating between bull-market address booms and bear-market dormancy purges. The curve rises throughout, but its slope breathes with the cycle.
The recent stall and re-acceleration
One window detail worth flagging: from mid-2024 to mid-2025 the count nearly flatlined (roughly 53.2M to 53.7M, under 1% annual growth), then re-accelerated to a fresh all-time high around 57.3M recently. The stall overlapped with a period of elevated on-chain fees, when small transfers became uneconomical. What drove the re-acceleration cannot be decomposed from the total alone — genuine new users, inscription-related activity, or bulk wallet-management behavior all mint new addresses. An aggregate count can only flag the change of pace, not its composition.
Addresses are not people: three distortions
First, one person can control hundreds of addresses (HD wallets rotate to a fresh address per receipt by default), so the total systematically overstates headcount. Second, exchange omnibus wallets distort the other way: hundreds of millions of custodial users may appear on-chain as a few thousand addresses. Third, dust and inscriptions: addresses holding negligible junk balances (airdrop dust, inscription residue) inflate the base permanently. Read this curve for long-term trend and inflection points of pace — never infer user counts from the absolute level — and pair it with active addresses (a separate page here) so stock and flow cross-check each other.
Non-zero addresses is the broadest adoption gauge — any balance counts. The long-term trend is near-monotonic growth; rare declines usually trace to dust cleanup (e.g. after inscription waves) rather than genuine exits.
Alongside on-chain distribution, track derivatives positioning via open interest and long/short ratios.
