What this chart counts

The total BTC value of all transaction outputs created on-chain each day. Bitcoin uses UTXO accounting — every transaction consumes old outputs and creates new ones — and this chart sums the day's newly created outputs. It is the ceiling measure of nominal on-chain transfer throughput, taken raw from blockchain.info with no deduplication.

Why it far exceeds real transfer volume

The UTXO model guarantees that raw output volume overstates economically meaningful transfers: change outputs return to the sender yet count fully; exchanges shuffling funds between hot and cold wallets, or wallets consolidating dust, generate enormous outputs with no real change of ownership. On-chain data firms (Coin Metrics, Glassnode) apply change-detection heuristics to produce adjusted transfer volumes — typically a fraction of the raw figure. Assume this chart contains heavy self-transfer.

How to use it

Absolute levels mean little; trend and anomaly carry the signal. The long-run trend tracks overall on-chain money movement. Extreme single-day spikes usually mean exchange wallet maintenance or whale custody moves — not necessarily buying or selling. Cross-check with transaction counts, active addresses and fees rather than reading any one line alone.
