The share of addresses whose cost basis exceeds the market price — the proportion in unrealised loss, and the mirror image of the addresses-in-profit metric.

Though complementary to the profit share, the loss share has independent value: it directly quantifies latent overhead supply. When the loss share is high, rallies into those addresses' cost zones frequently meet concentrated selling — giving an on-chain basis for identifying rally resistance. Historically, periods with over half of addresses underwater have all been cycle-bottom zones, but they persist for months to a year, so this is no timing signal. Read alongside supply-in-loss for completeness: the address-count share and the coin-volume share often diverge sharply because large and small addresses have different cost structures.

Profit-and-loss metrics estimate unrealised gains and losses from on-chain cost basis, used to spot capitulation and euphoria. They rely on UTXO cost models and cannot see inside exchange ledgers, so a systematic error margin is always present.
