What are exchange flows?

Daily BTC moving on-chain into (inflow) and out of (outflow) exchange wallets. Coins sent to exchanges typically carry sell intent, while withdrawals usually head to self-custody for longer-term holding.

How to read it

Sustained inflow above outflow (net inflow) builds exchange inventory and potential sell pressure — common near cycle tops. Net outflow signals accumulation; extended net-outflow regimes have historically aligned with bottoming and uptrends. Single-day spikes are often internal wallet reshuffles, so trends beat single prints.

Methodology

Coin Metrics aggregates on-chain transfers of identified exchange wallet clusters covering major centralized exchanges, since 2011. Unidentified small venues and OTC custody are excluded, so absolute levels differ slightly across providers while trends agree.
