About Market Indices
What is the Fear & Greed Index?
It condenses market momentum, volatility, social sentiment and dominance into a single 0-100 score. Low values mean fear (often oversold conditions), high values mean greed (often overheated markets).
How should I use the Fear & Greed Index?
It is a contrarian sentiment gauge rather than a trading signal: extreme fear has historically coincided with accumulation zones, while extreme greed warns of crowded longs and correction risk.
What is the Altcoin Season Index?
It measures the share of the Top 50 coins (by 24h futures volume, excluding stablecoins and pegged assets) whose 90-day return beats Bitcoin. A reading of 75 or higher indicates altcoin season; 25 or lower indicates Bitcoin season.
Why does the index change so quickly sometimes?
The 90-day return comparison is sensitive to both altcoin rallies and BTC moves: a sharp BTC rally can flip many coins from outperforming to underperforming within days, dragging the index down fast.
Fear & Greed follows the alternative.me methodology (0 = extreme fear, 100 = extreme greed). The Altcoin Season Index counts how many of the Top 50 coins by futures volume beat BTC over the lookback window: 75+ signals altcoin season, 25 or below signals Bitcoin season.
