Hong Kong Bitcoin ETFs
What is Hong Kong Bitcoin ETFs?
Hong Kong's spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs listed in April 2024 as the first crypto ETFs in the Asian time zone to permit in-kind creations and redemptions. This page is planned to track their flows, assets under management and premium or discount relative to US products.
How to read it
Hong Kong's products are far smaller than their US counterparts, so daily percentage swings are extreme and absolute dollar figures are more informative than growth rates. Two things genuinely matter: in-kind creation lets market makers settle directly in spot, which should compress premiums and discounts; and the Asian trading session makes these products one of the few public windows onto Asian institutional demand — sustained divergence between Hong Kong and US flows usually reflects regional regulatory or funding differences.
Where it fits
ETF and institutional metrics track regulated fund flows. Daily prints are extremely noisy and a single day's number carries almost no predictive value — read weekly and cumulative trends instead.
Methodology & caveats
Structurally the Hong Kong products differ from their US counterparts in ways that show up directly in the data. They have supported both cash and in-kind creation since launch, while the US products began cash-only, and they trade in three currency counters, HKD, USD and RMB, whose relative volumes hint at which investor base is actually active. Disclosure runs through HKEX and the issuers at daily cadence, one session ahead of the US: on days when Asian macro news breaks, Hong Kong flow prints before American funds open, making it a leading indicator in the narrow but useful sense of time zones. Fee structures sit above US levels, which caps the products' appeal for pure beta exposure and tilts the holder base toward investors who specifically need Asian-hours execution or local regulatory wrappers. Persistent premium and discount divergence from the US products is the single most informative series, because it isolates regional demand pressure from the global price.
