Two institutional narratives in one frame

This page overlays two holdings curves: cumulative net inflows into US spot Bitcoin ETFs (in BTC), and the actual holdings of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). They embody opposite paths to institutionalization — ETFs are traditional finance's pipeline, thousands of investors allocating passively through brokerage accounts; Strategy is a single public company's balance-sheet decision, persistently converting equity and debt financing into bitcoin reserves. The relative slopes read directly as: which is absorbing coins faster, dispersed traditional money or concentrated corporate leverage?

Read the scope carefully

The critical asymmetry: the ETF line is cumulative net flow since launch on 2024-01-11, not total holdings — it excludes the hundreds of thousands of coins GBTC already held at trust conversion, so it systematically understates the ETF camp's true total. The Strategy line is actual holdings (since the first purchase in August 2020), compiled by strategytracker.com from company disclosures. Comparing them is flow-versus-stock: directions and slopes are meaningful, absolute levels are not. Sources: ETF flows from bitcoin-data.com (covering IBIT, GBTC, FBTC and seven other funds); Strategy holdings updated per announcement.

A three-act window

Act one (early 2024): ETF inflows exploded from day one, and on 2024-03-13 the cumulative line first exceeded Strategy's holdings — four years of corporate buying overtaken in two months. Act two (2024-2025): both lines climbed together; ETF cumulative flow peaked at 726K BTC on 2025-10-10 while Strategy kept buying up to 847K (June 2026). Act three (late 2025 onward): the ETF line turned down to about 565K — in a cumulative series, decline means sustained net redemptions — while Strategy essentially stopped adding but sold nothing. Act three exposes the two capital temperaments most clearly: ETF money ebbs; the corporate treasury has so far only flowed one way.

Usage advice

Read this page as a structural decomposition of institutional demand: the ETF line's slope is a real-time thermometer of traditional finance's marginal appetite (daily frequency, strongly price-correlated); Strategy's steps are one large buyer's discrete decisions (event-driven, weakly price-correlated). Both rising together is the strongest demand configuration; ETF ebbing while Strategy holds (the current configuration) means passive money is retreating while the conviction holder stands pat. One warning: Strategy's holdings concentrate in a single entity whose equity-and-debt structure embeds leverage on the bitcoin price — tail risk of forced disposition in extreme scenarios is real, and this smooth ascending curve will not warn you in advance.
Beyond institutional flows, check leverage via open interest and BTC liquidations.
