Frequently asked questions
What are stock and commodity liquidations?
A stock or commodity liquidation happens when a trader is force-closed on a perpetual contract that tracks a stock, metal, energy product, exchange rate or equity index. Centralised exchanges offer these as tokenised contracts, while on Hyperliquid independent developers deploy on-chain markets via HIP-3. When price moves against the position and margin no longer covers it, the exchange closes the position by force.
Do these numbers double-count with the crypto liquidations page?
No. The two pages read from physically separate tables: pure crypto liquidations go to the main table, while stock, commodity, forex and index liquidations go to this page's table. Any single liquidation appears on exactly one of the two pages, never both.
How is the asset class determined?
From each exchange's official instrument metadata, in this priority order: trade.xyz official spec sheets (which name the underlying entity), Binance's underlyingType field, Hyperliquid HIP-3 builder DEX mappings, then a built-in fallback table. Nothing is guessed from ticker regexes, and every decision is logged with its evidence for review.
What is the difference between long and short liquidations?
A long liquidation force-closes a trader who was betting on a rise, and usually signals a sharp drop. A short liquidation force-closes a trader betting on a fall, and typically accompanies a rapid rally. Large clusters of liquidations often cascade and amplify volatility.
Which exchanges are covered and how often does the data refresh?
Every exchange we ingest that lists traditional-finance perpetuals: Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate.io, HTX, Hyperliquid (HIP-3), Lighter, Aster, BitMEX and Bitfinex. All amounts are converted to USD and the data refreshes every 30 seconds.
Why does the same asset have different tickers on different exchanges?
Exchanges spell the same underlying differently — gold appears as both XAU and GOLD, silver as XAG and SILVER. An alias table normalises these into one asset, so the page shows a single row instead of splitting one asset across several.
