Where the MVRV Z-Score came from
In October 2018, Murad Mahmudov and David Puell published the MVRV ratio, building directly on the Realized Cap concept that Nic Carter and Antoine Le Calvez (Coin Metrics) had just introduced. About a week later, the pseudonymous analyst Awe & Wonder normalized it by standard deviation, creating the MVRV Z-Score. The problem it solves: raw MVRV extremes land at different levels each cycle, so a single fixed threshold doesn't compare cleanly across eras.
What it computes
Z-Score = (Market Cap − Realized Cap) ÷ historical standard deviation of Market Cap. The numerator is the aggregate paper profit of all holders — the gap between market price and on-chain cost basis. The denominator restates that gap as "how many standard deviations from historical norm." High readings mean price has stretched far above on-chain cost basis by historical standards; low or negative readings mean price has fallen below the cost basis of a large share of supply.
Track record
Verifiable on public charts: the 2011, 2013 (twice), 2017 and 2021 cycle tops all pushed the Z-Score into its upper red zone, while the 2015, late-2018 and late-2022 bear bottoms printed in the green zone. That said, the November 2021 top ($69K) peaked at a visibly lower Z-Score than prior cycles — the red zone is a reference band, not a law.
Known distortions
Three caveats. First, the standard deviation uses the full history, so early-era volatility stays in the denominator forever — peak readings decay structurally across cycles. Second, Realized Cap prices lost ancient coins at ancient prices, dragging the cost basis down. Third, it is a slow, cycle-scale metric with almost no resolution on monthly swings. Cross-check with NUPL and the Puell Multiple rather than trading it in isolation.
